We’re all about helping you to budget better – that’s why we’re Australia’s most affordable meal kit, and we’re up to 20% cheaper than the supermarket.
Here’s how we crunched the numbers to make sure we’re bringing you the toppest of top value, every single week.
Australia’s most affordable meal kit
Our starting portion price is just $3.99. Yep, you read that right! Let’s break it down:
- Our cheapest meal kit plan used to be $5.49 per portion for a 4-person box containing 6 recipes
- BUT! We wanted to save you even more than that, so this year we came up with our budget-busting, tummy-filling range of Savers recipes
- We’ve got 8 different Savers recipes on our menu every week, which each cost either $1 or $1.50 per portion LESS than our core menu recipes
- Because we have so many Savers to choose from each week, you could go for a box full of Savers only – even if you were on our biggest plan of a 4-person box containing 6 recipes
- If you were on that plan and chose 6 of the Savers recipes to fill up your box, that means you’d save up to $36 every week (excluding shipping of your box) compared to ordering recipes from our core menu…
- …which would then drop your price per portion down from $5.49 to an itty bitty $3.99
- This means that compared to all other meal kits in Australia, Dinnerly comes out on top as the hands-down lowest price meal kit in Australia. Epic!
Up to 20% cheaper than the supermarket
Compared to shopping for the same ingredients at the supermarket, our meal kits are up to 20% cheaper. How do we know that for sure? Well, we did a tonne of research alllllll over Australia, then we checked, checked and checked the numbers again. It’s a bit of a long story, so settle in with a cuppa to read about how we worked that out:
- We know times are tough right now, so this year we came up with our new range of budget-busting, tummy-filling Savers recipes
- If you were on that plan and chose 6 of the Savers recipes to fill up your box, that means you’d be paying just $3.99 per plate, and your total box cost would be $95.76 (both prices are excluding shipping of your box)
- So we made a big list of all the ingredients that we send you to cook 6 different Savers recipes in one week…
- …because what we wanted to work out is: if you went and bought all the same ingredients from a supermarket anywhere in Australia, would it end up being more expensive than the $95.76 you pay for ordering those 6 recipes from Dinnerly? We were pretty sure it would be more expensive to get them from a supermarket, but we wanted to have solid numbers to prove it.
- So, we took our list of ingredients to make those 6 recipes, and went shopping all over Australia
- We bought the ingredients from leading supermarkets in metro areas in every state and territory in Australia. We’re talking Woolworths, Coles, Aldi and IGA!
- And when we were shopping, we took a bunch of things into consideration to make super sure our approach was fair:
-
- we excluded the pantry items you usually supply yourself for cooking our recipes (bits like olive oil and salt)
- we bought the smallest pack sizes of the ingredients needed, so long as that included enough to make each recipe (because we send you pre-portioned ingredients only
- if there was an ingredient that was used in more than one of the 6 recipes, then we only bought it once and made sure there was enough for all the recipes that used that same ingredient (things like rice or noodles). But, to be extra fair, that actually didn’t happen much because our recipes have so much variety in the ingredients (yet another reason that ordering a Dinnerly box is so much better than buying in bulk to save dollars, because that means you end up with bland, same-same dinners each week).
- Then we wrote down the total cost of all the ingredients cost, for each of those shops that we did
- Then we made an average cost for each of the retailers, so that we had an average cost of getting all those ingredients from Coles, and an average cost of getting all those ingredients from Woolworths, and so on (this also helps to reflect that different ingredients cost different amounts, depending on which state or territory you live in)
- Out of all these average shop costs for each of the retailers, the biggest difference in cost between cooking those 6 recipes with us and shopping for the same ingredients at a supermarket was 20%
- And that’s why we know that cooking with Dinnerly is up to 20% cheaper than the supermarket
Note: Supermarket price comparison research substantiating “up to 20% cheaper than the supermarket” claim was undertaken in August 2023.
